IN PHOTO: The Sacred Painting of the Image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Porta Vaga

(Registered Property, City of Cavite, Cavite; National Cultural Treasure, National Museum)

This sacred oil on canvas painting portrays the Blessed Virgin Mary in solitary prayer and meditation on the night of the first Good Friday, contemplating on the sufferings that Jesus Christ endured. Oral tradition attributes the image’s mysterious provenance to a miraculous event, stating that it was found floating along the shores of Cañacao Bay in Cavite City in 1667. It is widely recognized as the “oldest existing dated Marian painting in the Philippines”. The painting is currently housed in San Roque Parish Church in Cavite City, and in 2017, it was declared a National Cultural Treasure by virtue of Museum Declaration No. 2-2017.
