IN PHOTO: Hosanahan (Registered Property, Municipality of Caramoran, Catanduanes)
This century-old tradition in Caramoran marks the start of the Holy Week observance, centering on the construction of Hosanahan: monumental, castle-like arches built to vividly reenact Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. In the days leading up to Palm Sunday, Caramoranons design and assemble several of these elaborate structures from indigenous materials like bamboo, nipa leaves and palm fronds. On Palm Sunday itself, children climb the structures to sing the traditional hymn “Hosana sa Aki ni David” while showering flower petals and aromatic tara leaves upon the devotees below for good luck. The tradition is not merely a relic of the past but a living heritage actively passed down to the youth of Caramoran, Catanduanes.
