Mapped Cultural Properties within the Kanlaon Volcano's Permanent (4km) and Extended Danger Zones (6km, 10km, 14km)
Kanlaon Volcano is an active stratovolcano on the island of Negros, the highest peak in the Visayas region at 2,465 meters. Known for its frequent phreatic eruptions, including the moderate explosive eruptions last February 19 and 26, 2026, the volcano remains under Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). At this alert level, entry into the 4-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) without vigilance is prohibited, and flying aircraft near the volcano is not recommended. Hazards include sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, rockfalls, landslides/avalanches, and lahars during prolonged, heavy rainfall.
In line with this alert status, the Philippine Registry of Heritage (PRH) has mapped cultural properties registered in its database located within the PDZ (4 km) and the EDZ (6 km, 10 km, and 14 km), as of March 2026. These Cultural Property Hazard Maps integrate hazard data from HazardHunterPH, which generates indicative hazard assessment reports for specific locations, with information from the PRH database. Such maps are published to understand vulnerabilities and guide strategies to protect cultural assets from potential damage caused by natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions.
Currently, a total of thirty-eight (38) mapped tangible-immovable cultural properties registered to the PRH were identified as prone to the volcano’s destructive lahar and pyroclastic density current hazards, which fall under Bago City, La Carlota City, and the municipalities of La Castellana and Murcia in the province of Negros Occidental.
