IN PHOTO: Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm - Recreational Hall (Registered Property, City of Puerto Princesa; National Historical Landmark, National Historical Commission of the Philippines)

Constructed in 1924, the recreational hall provides a crucial space for recreational and rehabilitation programs at Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF), serving officers, guests and Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). The hall is situated within the IPPF, a penal colony originally founded on November 16, 1904, during the American colonial period. Known for its “prison without bars” approach, the IPPF uses the hall to offer PDLs with opportunities to participate in sports, cultural events and skill-building programs that promote personal growth and a sense of community. In recognition of its historical significance, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) officially declared the IPPF a National Historical Landmark by virtue of Resolution No. 06, Series of 2004.
