Mapped Cultural Properties within the Mayon Volcano's Permanent (6km) and Extended Danger Zones (7km, 8km)
Announcements
Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region, renowned for its near-perfect conical shape and an elevation of 2,463 meters. As the country’s most active volcano, its recent activity has placed it under Alert Level 3 (high level of volcanic unrest) by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Under this alert level, entry into the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and entry into the Extended Danger Zones (EDZ) without vigilance are prohibited, and flying aircraft close to the volcano is not recommended due to possible hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, rockfalls, landslides/avalanches, and lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
In line with this alert status, the Philippine Registry of Heritage (PRH), also known as the Talapamana ng Pilipinas, mapped cultural properties registered in database that are located within the PDZ (6 km) and the EDZ (7 km and 8 km), as of January 2026. These Cultural Property Hazard Maps integrate hazard data fromHazardHunterPH, which generates indicative hazard assessment reports for specific locations, with information from the PRH database. Such maps are published to understand vulnerabilities and guide strategies to protect cultural assets from potential damage caused by natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions.
Currently, a total of sixty-three (63) mapped tangible-immovable cultural properties registered to the PRH were identified to be prone to the volcano’s destructive lahar hazard, which falls under multiple cities and municipalities in the province of Albay.
