IN PHOTO: Kaamulan Festival, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon (Registered Property, Province of Bukidnon)
“Kaamulan” came from the Binukid word “Amul,” which means “to gather.” It’s a Bukidnon cultural community gathering. It might signify a datuship ritual, wedding ceremony, harvest thanksgiving feast, peace treaty, or all of these. The Kaamulan is held yearly in Malaybalay City, the provincial capital of Bukidnon is the province’s founding anniversary, dated from the second half of February to March 10.
As an ethnic celebration, Kaamulan honors the customs and traditions of the seven indigenous people that once inhabited Bukidnon: the Higaonon, Talaandig, Manobo, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon, Umayamnon, and Bukidnon. Seven cultural communities of Bukidnon congregate in a town, wearing their finely woven traditional clothing with ornaments, anklets, earrings, necklaces, leglets, headdresses, and amulets. They dance, sing, and engage in native sports. Kaamulan has developed throughout the years to emphasize Bukidnon’s cultural communities, goods, local enterprises, and several others roped into the festivity.
The Kaamulan has become a way for the younger generation, elderly locals, and even visiting outsiders to recognize and appreciate Bukidnon’s unique cultural history. The Kaamulan festival is excellent for Bukidnon’s people to get together and enjoy their rich culture.
