IN PHOTO: La Union Watchtowers (National Cultural Treasure, National Museum; Registered Property, Province of La Union)
The structure is a 400-year-old watchtower that was made of reddish bricks, standing 5.6-meter high and is located at the Municipality of Luna, La union. It was built by the Spaniards to serve as a lookout post for approaching pirate attacks in the coastal cities of La Union from the Japanese, Chinese, and Moro countries as well as other conquerors. The guards urged the citizens of Luna to guard their homes and businesses against robbers. The Baluarte also functioned as a communication tower during World War Two.
Due to deteriorated base and foundation, the watchtower stood in disarray. With concrete post supports on each side, its two parts stand upright. Recently, the tower was completely split in half after being struck by large seas and powerful winds brought on by a typhoon. The Philippine government was able to restore the tower while preserving the materials and architectural style of the building. Nonetheless, the restored Baluarte is still a historical site in the province that symbolizes Luna's stability and unity. Its appearance today resembles a fusion of old and new architecture.
