CULTURAL PROPERTIES REGISTERED NEAR MT. MAYON PDZ AND EDZ
Mayon volcano is the beautifully symmetrical and highly active stratovolcano that is situated in the province of Albay in Bicol Region. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Mayon volcano has a 6-km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and its alert level was raised from Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) to Alert Level 3 (increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption) dated 08 June 2023. Entry into the 6-km PDZ and flying of any aircraft close to the volcano is not allowed due to the possible hazards that might occur such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, rockfalls or landslides/avalanches and lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
Based on the Mayon Volcano Alert Scheme, during Alert Level 2 (Increasing Unrest), the 6-km radius Danger Zone may be extended to 7 km in the sector where the crater rim is low. On the other hand, during Alert Level 4 (Hazardous Eruption Imminent), extension of the Danger Zone to 8 km or more in the sector where the crater rim is low will be recommended.
Currently, there are three mapped tangible-immovable cultural properties registered to the Philippine Registry of Cultural Property near the extended 8-km radius from the crater of Mt. Mayon, which falls under the jurisdiction of the municipalities of Camalig and Malilipot, Albay.
